Post SRU to invest in tier below Pro14
The SRU are to move towards a semi-pro league between Pro14 and club rugby.

Club rugby will become fully amateur, while the their above will be made up of 6 teams, 1 from each of the academy sites plus 2 other teams.
7 clubs have applied for the 6 spots.

Has anyone got any ideas as to who has applied, who will get the spots and MORE IMPORTANTLY, who should get the franchise spots.

My suggestions would be
Edinburgh City ( group of Currie, Watsonians and SMFP)
Glasgow Hawks
Ayr
Borders
Aberdeen
Central districts (Stirling County and others)

The two pro clubs will have a steady supply of mediocre players from 4 clubs in Scotland and their colleges plus a supply of good players from the top 3 or 4 clubs in Australia and New Zealand, should they want them.

Not unlike the french Espoirs ...each of 30 pro teams has a development side of promising players normally limited to U23. Theycompete in leagues and there is a Chzmpionship process.

Having said that they sometimes are represented in Top14 sides and some have been capped before total Pro contract. cue Parra as anexample, there are others ...eg Chat the Racinghooker ...Tolofua etc...

Cynically, one could say that it hasn't succeded in enhancing french presence at the International and Top14 :D

In reality the teams are often occupied by privileged dev players that have been chery picked from junior rugby and their presence can be related to offset the regs which limits # of pro contracts in Top14 squads...

What happened to the proposed 'A league' that was set to be announced?
That would seem to fit this gap nicely if Sco/Wal/Ire and possibly one or more European countries put a team each?

It's an interesting concept but I think it's a step which is necessary.

We are seeing, in increasing numbers, young Scots who don't get a contract with either Edinburgh or Glasgow moving into English academies with the associated risk of them then being lured by the red rose if the SRU don't get their fingers out. This intermediary step might quosh some of that.

I would like to see something similar in Wales. Reduce the premiership to 8 teams then farm out players from the regions (as happens now except they'd be concentrated into fewer teams). Have promotion and relegation for the bottom team, but with a rule so that each region is guaranteed at least one team from the 8. Try and drum up some real interest via televised games on S4C, promotion etc., and try and schedule the game to minimise clashes with home PRO14 games for their respective regions.

Agree, but the parochial interest if little towns and villages in Wales will prevent this.
In all nations we have to split the pro game from the amateur game, whilst having an effective pathway to the top for players.

In American sport, this is provided in the main by colleges and universities, so there is a pathway, but they cannot get promotion to pro league, so the only interest is in the positive effect it has on their college if they do well or have a star player go on to the pro leagues.

The problem is not the village teams it's the old first class teams.

The planned 'Super Six' launch is 1st May, haven't heard any news since beginning of the year, though the SRU are allegedly talking to seven teams to create 6 franchises. Plan is investment of £62.500 from the SRU which would be matched by the 'Franchises' plus a further £75.000 for a head coach and support staff. Player salaries would be capped at £12.000 and will not be allowed to play in the amateur ranks below whilst contracted. SRU stated they expect squads of 35 players

12 teams have applied for the super 6 - Ayr, Boroughmuir, Currie Chieftains, Dundee, Edinburgh Accies, Gala, Glasgow Hawks, Hawick, Heriot’s, Melrose, Stirling County and Watsonians. Teams will be announced 1st of May

Also SRU been looking at investing in an English club for the past 3 years, with Newcastle a possibility, where a place for rising stars of the Scottish game, as well as aspiring coaches, get to spend all, or part, of a season at another club while not quite in the picture at Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The SRU already have a tie-in with Stade Nicois, who operate in the fourth tier in France. They've already placed players with the Nice club, some youngsters in need of wider experience, some older players who want to develop their coaching with retirement in mind.

So we have the 'Super 6' - Ayr, Boroughmuir, Heriot’s, Melrose, Stirling County and Watsonians. No Glasgow team, Dundee miss out so no team from north of the Forth and only 1 borders team. Just hope it doesn't turn out to be a 6 team play each other a million times bore fest

Disappointing that there are so many teams in Edinburgh. Smacks of old boy network.

Would like to have seen one from Glasgow and 2 from Edinburgh instead.

Think Stirling is good pick for Caledonia as close enough to Central belt to pick up more players, although the development academy in Aberdeen will probably have to move.

Glasgow Hawks asking for an independent review due to the Edinburgh trio, apparently contravenes SRU's own rules. Also SRU still looking at how fixtures will be worked out and with who, potentially welsh regional U23 squads. Below article is an interesting read
