If we don't get a grip on this soon, we will follow France and our seniors will fade away, which is a shame because out youth is loaded with talent. The management of player workload and welfare is so piss poor it's infuriating. People like to comment about how England under perform for the number of players we have, it's because we are ultra conservative in our selection and those selected are worked into the ground. We may have more to select from, that doesn't mean we actually select from them or that we treat them properly once selected.

I feel English rugby will make or break in the next decade and it will be a club vs country argument. If the clubs win, it will go the way of English football, if country wins then we could potentially be a top 3 country for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately I can't see anyone in a suit breaking the clubs stranglehold over player workload.

Which do the English fans prefer? Club or country?

It's hard to tell, I've seen people arguing both ways. Personally I prefer country over club, but it's particularly easy for me now as my club is doing so badly.

I would think the committed local fan follows the club rather than country, whereas the marginal attendee will go for the internationals especially the corporate side.

Don't think that there is massive support for the region's on this forum at least not as much as other forum's so the answer would really be different depending on which forum you asked, I for one would have country over region every time but perhaps I'm not the right person to ask

Mate, you’re the perfect person to answer. It’s not a collective thing, just personal opinion. Tel suggests that the frogs like club better, kiwis are country. I thought it’d be club on here tbh.

For me, country. I am from the middle of Wales so jot near the regions. I like them all.

I have never felt any loyalty to a particular club or region in the whole 40 years I have been watched rugby. I think that is actually a positive as the whole tribal club thing has tended to be to the detriment of our game. Whatever region is the best at a given time; that is the one I think we should look to and to an extent build around. Too many Welsh supporters argue the case for their local tribal loyalty.

The majority of those involved with rugby in Cymru or who go to watch games are Country first. there is the least conflict of interest between the schools and the small clubs and international level. There is a minority of that would put the "regional" team they support first.
It may be that those who didn't spend their late teens and twenties playing for their "village" club or second or youth team but spent their Saturday afternoons attending one of the games played by a big name club are more likely to develop loyalty and priorities that differ.

Success is equally important for club and country. No player ever enters the sport without dreaming of ine day puling on their Countries shirt, It is the everest for every player, with representing the Lions being like planting a flag on top of the mountain top.

Of course players will always be satisfied at getting to certain levels, but winning trophies for your club and country is the eventual aim of all players. In England we have the player base and the financial ability to do quite a lot. What we need is centralised contracts to ease financial pressures on the clubs, even tighter controls on how many foreign players can play for the clubs, so the best are targeted, and less joirneyman recruited to fill the void of missing internationals, thus giving more room to conveyerbelt English players into club rugby, and the best towards the international team. Greater work on academies and providing this path would not only strengthen the clubs, but also the national side. For me seeing club and country winning is my rugby nervana.

Personally, and the people I know far prefer Bok rugby to even provincial/franchise/club.
Bit hard to support anything at the moment though, as we are shite from top to bottom :D
