Post Welsh problem at 13!
13 seems to me to be a position we have our greatest problem with JD2 injured, we don’t seem to have a single specialist 13, although a number of 12’s who can fill in there. Now we seem to have some depth in the back three, could any of them be converted to play 13? North has been tried, but it seems to me that Liam Williams, or Hallam Amos could have the required skills set, certainly with the ball. Any thoughts?

I cannot see any problems in any positions with the present team. We thrashed Scotland, and came very close to beating England at Twickenham.

More a question about what qualities are specifically required for a 13 and which of our squad have those qualities.

13 requires speed, very good defensive skills and good instincts of when to rush and not....Willims is adequate, North could be tested there....lots of options

I thought Scott Williams had his best game by far against Scotland at 13. He seems better suited to 13.

Really good thread in my opinion

I have mentioned about the lack of quality centres for some time and was shouted down a few years ago saying we had Roberts, JD and Scot Williams so what was I on about

My issue is our centres are step down from the competition. England have farrel, teo and Jospeh. JD is a class act but a farrel Joseph combination is a step up from what we can pick. Also farrel like it or not has been the difference in the last two games versus England

We have a crop of adequate centres with one very good one

Watkin looks like he has some attributes but makes a lot of mistakes at the moment. Tyler Morgan has real pace but can’t stay fit. Owen Williams can be an option but is a poor mans Farrell. Parkes is a stop gap and Scott Williams is a reserve at elite level.

The only saving grace is the era of the auxiliary flanker is over... ie those two at the blues, Hewitt and the other one whose name escapes me

Patchell is another player I feel could possess the skills set to play 13. He is often considered to be an option at 12 but why not 13? In fact this seems to happen for many “utility backs”, that they are considered to cover 10, 12 or 15 but not 13. James Hook, Gav, and Patch are good examples of this. I’m not sure North has the rugby intelligence to play 13 at the highest level. I feel Amos has some potential, as might Liam.

Owen Lane looks a good prospect! .. playing on the wing at the moment but looks like he has all the attributes for 13. Hopefully Tyler can get a run of games and stay fit! Willis Halaholo could do a job and qualified next year. Thinking more outside the the box Max Clark (Bath) and Johnny Williams (London Irish) may try their luck with Wales one day!!

It’s quite hard to defend at 13. Would be difficult to play patchell there

I think Roberts could be used as a sub. An effective player. Whether he still has the fitness? However longer term we need to find a new style.

I can’t really see the point in having him on the bench when he can only cover one position. Not sure he has the ability to vary his game specific to what is needed at the time he comes on.
