I think if Biggar were unavailable, or if we were picking a different player at 10, then there would be a case for including Halfpenny as I wouldn't want to rely on Priestland's kicking, or God forbid Patchell's. But Biggar is very nearly as good a goal kicker as Halfpenny so his kicking alone isn't enough to justify picking him. I'm not writing him off and certainly think he belongs in the squad, just right now there are better options at 15 and the wings.

I'd have Ha'penny on the bench with Priestland. As you say, not that much to choose between Biggar and Ha'penny in the kicking stakes. If Biggar has to go off then Priestland with Ha'penny is a good option.

Except that's using up 2 subs just to cover kicking duties with one of those subs resulting in a loss in ability in every other aspect. Generally subs should be used to change things up in the game, Priestland and Halfpenny as subs does not sound like a pairing that could do that.

Gatland going for a 1st/2nd 5/8 combo? or, at least, a more virile centre combo....

about time?

I reckon it'd be a waste of a sub. having Halfpenny on the bench to cover kicking duties. With Biggar and Owen Williams both on the field and both very accomplished kickers, there's no need for 1/2penny to even be in the matchday 23.

SQUAD UPDATE:
Tyler Morgan has been released from Wales squad due to injury.

Scott Williams has been called into the squad and linked up with them at training this morning

Very harsh for Morgan who, as the only 13 in the squad besides Jonathan Davies, would almost certainly have expected to play at some point. But with Scott a capable replacement it hardly feels like the squad has been weakened.

Especially now that Benetton will apparently have most if not all their internationals released this weekend!

I remember The Brumbies with Gregan and larkham such a wonderful team ... so strange that Welsh Rugby is catching on so bloody late!

Mind you: String used to call it ping pong in them days just after the Ebbw debacle with Newport, so probably the WRU fell asleep them 15 years ago?

If Webb is out injured I think Lloyd Williams is the form scrumhalf.
IMHO Gareth Davies plays hot and cold, sometimes he is absolutely brilliant but there are chinks in his armour.
I'd rather see him on the bench whoever starts, he can be a great finisher.

Lloyd isn't good enough to hold a place down - and he's tweaked a hamstring.

Source? But yes, he has (rightly) fallen out of favour ever since he had a mare last year against Japan.

Three days before an international, and no match thread. Sign of the times.
