Yep, missed it damn, just watch highlights, still in Asia, but Portia Woodman, Naufua scuse spelling, great. Hopefully NZU can make these girls and sevens full time pros.
Great for all, kids etc, wish I did and could have watched more, my girl at 11 would have loved it she loves the ABs.

The amatuer girls of NZ beat the professionals of England - and it was a cracking game. Wales also beat the hosts Ireland in the 7th/8th place playoffs too so well done there girls.

I must admit I didn't expect to enjoy the biscuit-bumper rugby but I've been pleasantly surprised.

The english are all out of a job now. It is good that amateurs have shown up the false promise of professionalism.

There seems to be a bit of a call here to make the Kiwi girls a pro team.

Do you make a team professional to get them an audience to pay the bills or do you make them professional when they have an audience that pays the bills?

IMO you need to earn the cash to be a pro team. If you're in deficit you're not pro, you're a charity.

A tad Harsh calling folks a charity just because they got other jobs but can find the time to play.

The basic problem with professionalism is that it filters out the skilled but otherwise employed players and it skews the game towards those who can spend all day in the gym.

You end up with a set of players able to play a simple game at high attritional intensity that shortens careers for explosive moments of tragedy and delight worthy of The Roman Colosseum.

It simply isn't sustainable as the melt down in Southern Hemisphere Rugby is showing.

This Kiwi team may well be heralding a new way.

2 minutes 30, possibly best try of year

Professionalism needed at least for these girls and 7s, for us to get Gold medal 2019, they need to be pro, and these girls too, cant wait to they have real pathways and get what they deserve, great team, great girls.. Pro all the way :thumbright:

I never called them a charity. I said if they get made pro without actually providing revenue then it's a charity.

Players are playing more games and having longer careers than ever.

I simply think that the process should be "*fupp* a lot of people are watching these players on TV or going to the games, its earning us cash, we should pay the players" rather than "a few people watched the highlights of the final of the biggest tourney (but never any other games) and we should now pay these players just because."

It's the same as a participation medal. If they play good rugby, build a fan base, attract advertisers, then they absolutely deserve to be paid commensurate to the income they bring in compared to every other pro team in their respective region. Pro sport shouldn't be a social welfare system.

@ FMY

Fair words all.

I suppose that's why the english are all out of contract.

There seems to be a demand in sport these days for Male/Female equality irrespective of the game performance.

It would be a fool who would grasp that deadly dagger.

But then I am a fool :kermit:

We have seen how male Rugby has deteriorated since the inception of professionalism and the enforcement of NFL like game plans for the dummy's to follow by rote. Artistry has been lost in most parts of the Earth, except perhaps New Zealand.

It is nice that your Female amateurs have done good.
