Post Gatland says Lions Capt between Farrell and Warburton???
Came on as a footnote to TV news this evening but I cant find reference ..

'Gatland says Lions Captaincy between Farrell and Warburton '?.?

Why would he announce it before making a decision?

Farrell? ....

Warburton ... best left to demolish ABs at breakdown and out of limelight?

Hmmm...

There is this quote ...

Warburton, as you say is playing well without the burden captaincy (i think it is for him). Never been his biggest fan, but i think he is probably a definite Test starter, which in my opinion is the only reason to pick him as tour Captain. It should not be picked merely on that basis.

I think it will be Warburton, he's Gatland's man, this also indicates that the decision to replace him with AWJ was presumably Howleys?

I think if warburton gives gatland any kind of reason to pick him he will name him as captain

His form has been pretty good this tournament

Needs probable starters and both of them fit the bill. There will be plenty of experience and back up on the pitch I don't think it is of huge concern personally. I thought Warburton was favourite a few weeks back. Wouldn't be overly keen on Farrell.

As Gatland said :-

Quote:
"For me, the first thing with a Lions captain is, if you're picking a Lions starting XV tomorrow, I'd look at it and go, 'do I think that person's likely to start?' There'd be no guarantees of course but that will potentially narrow it down for the captain of the Lions".

Hmmmm.

I'd suggest he goes for 4 captains, it worked well for that Llanelli feller.

I dont think the Captain will be Welsh - there will be enough fallout if the team lose in NZ without WG poisoning the national setup further by associating one of his own players with the captaincy as well.

That seems a horrendously negative view to take...but you cant help but be cynical sometimes

There is plenty of competition for places but IMO only 3 nailed on starters. Sam, Farrell and Sexton after last Saturdays battering which he stood up to like Jon Snow taking on Ramsey Bolton's army. Heroic performance.

It'll be one of them 3 but Farrell while he doesn't have much in the way of captaincy experience would be a good 'neutral' choice.

AWJ has dirt tracker written all over him

Not sure about that - I think AWJ could make the test bench at worst.

I see Rory Best as midweek leader with Owens & George as test hookers

If Hartley goes he could well be the dirt tracker Capt George, Owens, Best are better players

Has Farrell grown up enough to keep a lid on his temper? Sam has been there and kept his equilibrium under pressure.

English players recently have been allowed to play on the front foot and been used to winning regularly so no need to throw wobblies.

Remains to be seen how Farrell and other England players react when under the cosh as they undoubtedly will be in NZ.

Captain needs to keep his cool and stay on the field whatever the frustrations and I have my doubts about some players in that respect.
