And fly-half, please. Though we in Wales usually use outside-half, and obviously in Ireland, out-half, and NZ 1st five-eighth.

This is non sense.

What you ought to be asking is for why southern teams have second 5 8's ... Wales tried with Iestyn Harris a long time ago and it went down the swanny.

I think the idea was that players on the field had more than just their position. They could combine with others depending upon where the ball was. Think of the ball as being the focus and the players being able to bring it into full clarity. None of that old fashioned 'not my wing' shit that so pervades and undermines Rugby in Wales today.

I could teach Pods to Labradors and Collies but never to self opinionated poodles.

I think you need multi talented players to work it... It's been a while since I've seen it used, but I would think that today's defences require more discipline?
