Post Playing prop for the first time... My boy
My almost 11 year old boy got picked as a prop for his school; I kinda know he was picked there so he can actually play, being too slow for backline/loosie but too short for lock. Not sure if it's 1 or 3 yet....

Now I played TH in my final year at school, before and after was mostly blindside flank or 8th man - so I'm not really in a position to offer advice. And the coach played wing to quite a high level, but being a wing means he's useless for coaching props.

My boy is short and thin, but has quite a deep chest and what I'd call swimmer's shoulders, broad but not massively heavy. I think he's strong (what Dad doesn't if his boy), but truth be told, I'm a little scared of my boy being thrown out into the scrumming hell unprepared...

Any advice chaps? Strength, warming up exercises, tricks of the trade.... Would greatly appreciate any!

Tell him to go out , give it all and enjoy, worry about how it goes after, he will be playing his own age group after all

At 11, maybe "keep your head and neck up, and your back straight."

Importantly as Jim says "get out there and enjoy yourself" - and silence from the parent touchline coaches!!

I've coached schoolboy rugby, so I know how that feels, will do my best to keep my mouth shut outside of shouting support :thumbright:

I got in a high level club coach to help with coaching the front row when I coached - My granduncle who played provincial B in his day helped arrange. Helped a lot, wish I'd listened better.

11 is pretty young for specialised scrum coaching, for the next few years it will be getting to know the game rather than learning the tricks of the trade of a tight/loose head. Young bones are too soft and young muscles too varied in development to seriously pitch kids at that age against one another. Ideally he shouldn't be engaging in any one on one coaching specific to the position for at least another 3 or 4 years.

As long as he knows how to bind, and is aware of safety issues like "hips below shoulders" and no pulling down on his opposite number he should just concentrate on enjoying the game and getting fitter and stronger with the exercise.

11 is young for a specialist scrum coach....... but I fail to see what harm it would do, if he was worth his salt,he would only teach the basics, as he only needs the basics.

Why learn to do something wrongly when someone could show you how to do it right.

That's basically what I'm hoping for by asking here :thumbright: Any more? :D

Get a good long grip on the bind, then on the set his arm will be in the correct position to work.

Based on a few impromptu scrums back in the day when there were not 8 people on the bench, keep your feet back and don't try anything.. ;)

Yes, and he didn't try milking a penalty at the scrumming machine.
