would just give halfpenny gratis....save the wages...

These are both quite shitty comments. Halfpenny is a decent player, whether he is world class or not anymore is a different question. He does a pretty decent job for the Scarlets, and is a player you want in the squad surely?

I have always been a big Halfpenny fan, but would accept the statement being changed to Halfpenny was a world class player.
This year, I see him as no more than reasonable in a regional side. His game is way down on what it has been.

Not throwing him on the scrap heap, but he needs 'fixing'. This is probably through a good pre-season next year, and may be a bit of protecting this year. Give him a rest unless wee need him I say. Newport may be just what he needs.

Granted, and I agree.

Is Halfpenny playing as well as 5 or 6 years ago? Probably not
Is he in the World Class category at the moment? Probably not
Is he being selected for the Scarlets above other players more deserving of the place? This is the crucial question
Is he a shit player? No

Ok, he is expensive but is the sort of player the regions would want in the squad.

He is also the sort of player youngsters need as a leader both in training and when the game is tight.
He could be a huge asset to rugby in Wales if he is handled correctly.

He got a reputation for 'putting his body on the line', which he did for Wales, but you can not expect a player to do that in every game, and it seemed to be expected of him. He is not a physical payer, put was used as one. He needs a 'reset' and a year or two at drags could e just what he needs. He would have the added interest of being a guide for the younger players, without the pressure of keeping his place alongside other 'superstars'.

He was like a tool used for the wrong job. Hone him and clean off the rough edges and he will be good for his original job again

Which top Welsh International is expensive these days?

The WRU pay 60% of the salary, as appropriate.

The ones good enough to be earning outside Wales are expensive, our stay at homes cost peanuts.

And the regional hand-outs continue ......

For info :-

Wales squad players outside Wales for the 2018 Six Nations :-

Forwards:

Tomas Francis (Exeter Chiefs),
Taulupe Faletau (Bath),
Ross Moriarty (Gloucester).

Backs:

Rhys Priestland (Bath),
Owen Williams (Gloucester),
Josh Adams (Worcester Warriors),
George North (Northampton Saints),
Liam Williams (Saracens).

We must compensate the English clubs, but it's money well spent I'm sure.

But you have to factor in the cost of having a replacement available during call up period.
Yes, there has to be cover for damage, but to know the player is not available for X weeks as well means another wage.

Rather harsh.

Just an opinion, his best days are behind him, we have 2 very good goal kickers, and North is a real game breaker.
Money is still scarce.

Since you are the obvious expert i will defer to your superior knowledge. Having watched every minute of every Scarlets game this year, I find Halfpenny:
a) lacks speed, and slows other players down
b) adds little in attack a basic requirement for a full back today,
and
c) is injured again.

Newport is a better place for him under a NDC, not a high tempo, high speed team like the Scarlets.

Money is scarce still, although he does display great courage and is very popular with the squad.

The WRU has primacy of contract, don't forget...

Sadly George North is injury prone; and possibly not the Ace he used to be. He would be better off playing for the Dragons as part of the campaign to bring them up to the level of the other regions.

I don't say I am an expert. But the comments on here, yours included it would seem, seem to be along the lines of Halfpenny's inclusion in the squad being a hinderance. He does have a role to play, but whether this is ahead of Patchell or Dan Jones is the point I'm making.

I would say Patchell is a better option at 15 as he is younger, bigger and faster. Dan Jones is a 10, so I am bit confused with that one.

I did wonder today though, on Ashton's try, if Halfpenny were on the field today whether he would have been as far out of position as Patchell was.. ;)

I think we may be at cross purposes here.

Whether Dan Jones is better than Hafpenny or not isn't what I am trying to say.

I am stating from the perspective of the criticism that players like Cuthbert and Priestland get. They go from being perceived as World Class to being the shittest players there are. Both have left Wales as a result (it seems).

This is what I think the goldfish bowl is. We can't reasonably asses our players or results without getting over optimistic or very negative.
