Watching the footage I'm not altogether sure it was foul play or intentional.
Any other thoughts, I've not watched it in slo-mo.

I personally think his view of the jumper was blocked by Zebra players in the way and his eyes on the ball. Add to that the speed he was running. It's a difficult one. Rugby players have a duty of care so I do think he will get a ban just think it should be closer to two weeks and not ten.

His eyes were not on the ball, in the second before contact they were looking at the player, its as clear as these situations can be, he was not attempting to gather the ball and dangerously took a player out that was.

He was nudged away from the player who jumped but Ben angled back into him.

2 weeks is a bit optimistic, I reckon he might get 4-6 weeks for that one.

The bloke had a crashing fall and that'll count against the Ospreys lad.

I'd like to see it on slo-mo. In real time it happened so fast which makes it difficult to judge. What makes me think he will get a lighter banning is that he appears to have made no attempt to tackle. He was upright and running.

The Citing Hearing is tomorrow, we'll see if he gets some sympathy in due course, BR.

I hope so. To me, he appears to be a late developer who hasn't reached his true potential. Pity he is with a poor coaching set up in the Ospreys camp. :(

Ospreys' Ben John has been banned for two weeks after being cited for foul play in the 22-13 win over Zebre.

The centre, 26, was sent to the sin bin after 13 minutes of the Pro14 opener at Liberty Stadium for a dangerous challenge in the air on Matteo Minozzi.

A disciplinary panel in Dublin deemed that the act of foul play was worthy of a red card and warranted a low-end sanction of four weeks.

But John's behaviour and good disciplinary record saw this halved.

John will now miss Saturday's Pro14 trip to Glasgow and the home game on 16 September against Munster.

Two weeks? He's a lucky boy.

I am pleased for the lad that it wasn't more. I think there must have been some doubt in the minds of the panel about his intentions, as there was in my mind. There were two Zebra players obscuring his view until the last split second and he was running not tackling.
However, they have to do something to emphasize the 'duty of care'.
Hence the four weeks but two given back for 'good' behaviour.

You're probably on the money, BR.

I don't think it was intentional, but it was very careless. I have seen red cards for less. But in view of his past good record I think 2 weeks is a fair judgement.

The BBC report left out much of the fine detail.

Quote:
A Disciplinary Panel convened in Dublin, Ireland this afternoon to consider the Citing Complaint lodged against Ben John (No 13) of Ospreys Rugby resulting from the Round 1 game versus Zebre Rugby Club on Saturday, September 2.

The complaint was for an act of foul play under Law 10.4 (e) – Dangerous Tackling. A player must not tackle an opponent whose feet are off the ground.

The player accepted the complaint against him, however, the Disciplinary Committee, Michael Coghlan (chair), Jennifer Donovan and George Spotswood (all Ireland), decided that the act of foul play should be adjudicated under Law 10.4 (i) – Tackling the Jumper in the Air. A player must not tackle nor tap, push or pull the foot or feet of an opponent jumping for the ball in a lineout or in open play.

The Panel deemed that that act of foul play was worthy of a red card.

The Panel also recognised that although the player made unlawful contact in the air, it was reckless but not intentional and therefore warranted a low-end sanction of four weeks.

However, given the circumstances of the incident; the behaviour of the player and his club throughout the hearing and his good disciplinary record, the Panel decided to apply a maximum rebate of 50 per cent and thus suspended the player a period of two weeks.

The player can return to play on Monday, September 18, 2017 and was reminded of his right to appeal.

THIS is the thing that really irritates me about rugby disciplinary panels and always has done. What sane system starts with a *minimum* sanction and then works downwards from that with reductions until getting the final result?

It results in most players getting off easily and at times with laughable sanctions.

Surely the correct format would be you have a minimum for an offence then work UPWARDS for things like previous bad form and so on?
