I played Elite on a very early computer; the forerunner of the Commodore 64. Was it the Oric Atmos or the Acorn Electron?

It took a bit of getting into, but once you did it was really immersive. Probably the first of the modern style games, without the graphics ofcorse.

I had Elite on an 80286 luggable with an orange and black screen.

It was the best game I ever played.

Nearest flying one that came close to it was Descent, flying 3D in tunnels under a planet ...none of the trading shyte just flying and fighting and getting all woozy .. but not sea sick .. that was for wusses!

Played Elite on the C-64 got to rank Elite great game, then my save buggered up on my tape cassette could not be bothered to start from the beginning again so never played it again.
