Post Regional Age Grade Championship
I don't think we follow this as closely as we should. Anyway, opening fixtures last night.

Quote:
There was one win and one defeat for the Eyasses on the opening day of the new WRU Regional Age Grade Championship.

Two tries from wing Dafydd Howells and one apiece from centre Joe Thomas and wing Alex Bidwell earned the U16's a valuable 28-15 victory over the Scarlets at Parc y Scarlets.

Outside half Josh White kicked four conversions for good measure as the Ospreys made a winning start to their season.
In a one-sided first half, the visitors used the wind to establish themselves against a plucky Scarlets side who were far from overawed by their vistors.

After the break and with the elements in their favour, the Scarlets got back to 21-15 thanks to tries from wing Matthew Davies and no.8 Lee Taylor and a penalty and conversion from Jack Maynard.

However, the Ospreys finished with a bang and made sure of the points when Howells nipped in for his second try that White converted.

However, the Scarlets U18's were too strong for the Ospreys at Llandarcy, winning 36-16 courtesy of 21 points from Jordan Willaims. The outstanding outside half, who starred for the region in last last season's under 16 competition, scored two tries before half time with half back partner Rhodri Williams crossing for the first of his pair.

The scrum half added his second mid-way through the second half and Jake Randall added a fifth late on. Jordan Williams kicked four conversions and a penalty while for the Ospreys, who trailed 22-15 at half-time, there was a try from Ashley Evans and 11 points from the boot of outside half Sam Davies.

It was a successful start to the season for Blues North under 16s and the Blues under 18s as both sides proved too strong for RGC 1404.

The under 16s crossed for six tries at Abercwmboi in winning 42-14, whilst the under 18s helped themselves to 11 tries as they won comfortably, 69-24 at Merthyr.

Shaun Clark and Aled Summerhill were first on the mark for the North who led 14-0 at the interval. The pair crossed in the 14th and 21st minutes respectively with Sam Withers converting both. Thereafter, it was a straightforward afternoon for the hosts with centre Sam Edwards and Matthew Jeczalik touching down before the hour and replacement wing Grant Davies and back rower Jamie Allen completing the rout. Withers added two further conversions while Sam Hutchinson and Jarrod Evans adding one apiece.

RGC 1404 had their moments after the interval and were deserving of their two tries - the first from Emyr Gwynedd and the second from captain Rhys Williams. Osian Jones converted both.

Blues North team manager Nigel Way said; "We had a decent win up at Leicester last week, but we were certainly not getting carried away with that. However, the boys came into the game with some confidence and to their credit, I think they did okay. "

Up the road at Merthyr, the Blues were 36-0 to the good at half time with Cory Allen crossing for three tries and Rhys Patchell adding the extras. Lewis Young scored the first of his two after 24 minutes and Lloyd Chalke added a fifth as last season's champions pressed home their authority.

Rhys Evans added a sixth, Bradley Thyer a seventh, straight after the interval, and as the North struggled to contain, Young added his second and Ellis Jenkins, Ben Roach and Owen Jenkins numbers nine, 10 and 11.

Patchell converted two more for good measure with Garin Thomas adding two of his own. Like their under 16s, RGC 1404 never once dropped their heads and against a heavier Blues pack, they scored three tries of their own through Lewis Barker, Andrew Oakden and Mike Jones. Barker converted two and kicked a penalty and Alex Schwarz kicked a late conversion.

The Dragons under 16s kicked off their WRU Regional Age Grade campaign with a deserved 20-16 defeat of Blues South at Pandy Park, Cross Keys.

Having trailed 13-0 mid-way through the first half, the hosts recovered to lead 15-13 at half time courtesy of tries from centre Hallom Amos and wing Ashton Hewitt and a conversion and penalty from outside half Lloyd Rogers.

Geraint Llewellyn, who kicked two penalties and converted his own try before the interval, edged the South back in front with a penalty in the early stages of the second period, before the Dragons struck back with a winning try, five minutes from full time, by full-back and captain Mitchell Starr.

Although the Dragons found themselves down to 13 men in the second half when prop Luke Garrett and lock Derryn Jones were yellow carded, assistant team manager Colin Brennan said his side were good value for their opening night success.

“We had to hang in there when we lost the two forwards, but to the team’s credit, they did exactly that and were deserving of the win,” said Brennan.

Post Re: Regional Age Grade Championship
I'm enjoying age-grade rugby myself. Watched a few local teams end of last season and was very impressed with the standards of our kids!! (U.16) seen 2 games so far and wouldn't have missed either! Has to be said from all accounts, the Blues U.16 that played the Gog's had a sound result but, has to be said, there was a hell of a lot of commitment from the North Walian youngsters that will see them improve sooner than later!! All good stuff for Welsh rugby if even half of these youngsters improve all the way to eventual Regional (and beyond) level!!
Good thread Oed, I think we forget what a hell of a lot of work is being put in at the grass roots with youngsters and results are proving it too!!

Thanks, and you're right about the work being put in by lots of people who go uncreditted.

I'm going to try and get to a few O's and Scarlets age grade games this season. Is there a fixture list available?

I'm off to find one. :D

Yeah, it could prove a risky tactic. :D

The O's U16's backline should read;

13 Liam Popham

12 Joe Thomas

11 Dafydd Howells

10 Josh White
