Post Re: Boks vs Argies, round one
Argentina have won 3 matches in the 5 years of the Rugby Championship (a total of 27 games, not counting the one they just lost).

Italy have won 4 matches in the 6N in the same period (out of a total of 25 games).

Argentina are a better team than Italy (the two have played each other 4 times, 2 in each country, in the same period and Argentina have won all 4) but the RC is a much tougher competition than the 6N.

Argentina is a decent team - like Italy, their world ranking is artificially deflated because they mainly play against teams which are better than they are (similarly, Georgia and Fiji have a rankings boost because they mostly play weaker teams and thus win most of the games they play).

You are right though in that they do seem to overperform at the World cup. Though that said, they have won exactly 7 games vs. T1 teams at the World cup, out of a total of 21, so that's only a 33% winning percentage; and those wins came against France (2), Ireland (2), Scotland (2) and Italy (1) (they have also lost against Italy at the World cup). They have never beaten another RC team, nor England or Wales, at a World cup. They have also lost twice against Samoa and once against Fiji, though admittedly those were all between 1987 and 1995.

The way the world cup is structured can sometimes make teams look better than they are - the classic case being Wales in 2011; although we got to the semi final we won only 1 game out of 4 against T1 sides, and thrashed some T2s.

Yeah here is a question: in the long-term which gap is bigger - England and New Zealand or Italy and Argentina?

What is the point of the question.... other than for those interested in asking a pointless questions?

Don't really know what you mean by "in the long term" - do you mean which gap you think will shrink in the future or what?

I guess from our current vantage point, of the two scenarios - England overtaking NZ as #1; or Italy overtaking Argentina - the former seems more likely.
