It's been quite well accepted here. The econo financial advantages of the new format is mentioned
Which 2 teams to go? Will get the selection criteria later the week

Between Bulls Kings and Cheetahs
if its politics Lions will have to go. Transformation count but luckily for Lions the minister of sport that mentioned Lions was reshuffled into a new ministerial position.

Stormers Sharks Lions the above average winners

It's doing the rounds but until something official comes out, it's going to stay as is.

Roux from SARU :

“Retaining a number of under-performing teams in Super Rugby makes no sense from a high performance or financial point of view. We no longer have the resources to support them to the required level.”

Roux said the large number of South Africans now playing overseas had hastened the decision: “There are about five or six Super Rugby squads’ worth of South Africans playing overseas.

“In 2015, 257 South Africans appeared for leading teams overseas; last year it was 313 - including 65 Springboks. There were eight Van der Merwes, seven Du Preez’s and six Du Plessis’s alone!

Can't square the circle financially and is the crux of the problem, also personified by Argentina and the Jaguars .. such a vast difference in salary perspective cannot be managed.

Whilst the # may well be near the mark the quality is very varied and many playing in lower divisions.

The filthy lucre issue is the prime ill the only resolution of which is uniform salay caps which is 'pie in the sky'.

The fundamental danger is if the money aspect percolates to an expanding w/wide media promotion etc of the 'Club' game then World Rugby is to loose even more control; ... cue their reticence to promote a comprehensive w/wide timetable?

I believe that of the S Hemp areas SA is the most vulnerable to embrace the N Hemp and help cultivate expanding International Club Rugby there. Clubs like Saracens with huge backing by consortiums including SA interests aren't paying off significant deficits for the fun of it? ;) Offsite Cross Nation Club
games already becoming de rigueur.

4 Pro sa teams thus play S15 (Lions Stormers Sharks and Cheetahs or bulls)
The remaining 4 Pro teams in sa will play in a NH competition!
They are Steval Pumas, Leopards, Cheetahs or Bulls (depends who gets sacked from S15) and Griquas
Roux said: 'other overseas competition' but I cannot see them going anywhere else than NH
The rest of the teams (Kings, Bulldogs, Cavaliers, Griffons, Falcons, Welwitchias, Eagles) will continue semi-pro.

:thumbright: Cheers, seems like it isn't bullshit then. I'm glad they're going through with it, and so quickly too. The sunwolves better pull finger or they'll be next on the chopping block.

We might be speaking a little too soon about the demise of Aus rugby. Historically they've really only ever had one or very rarely two teams doing well in Super Rugby. This year they are all rubbish, but SA has had years like that too.

Three teams is probably a good fit, but four will help them retain players.

Japan and the Argies are safe because of the extra TV markets they attract.

Mexted was talking on radio sport about what he thinks will be the competition post 2020. Interesting stuff - a world tourney lined up vertically with the timezones in a conference system with a certain number of cross conference games then a finals series at the end. Could be awesome. Of course the NH guys here will hate the idea just because.

He's on the money in principle it just depends on 'shape'

...and the shape is doable .. conference should've been adopted in N Hemps ages ago, self centred Clubs and leagues refused :(

SANZAAR members looked at the numbers and made the collective decision that 2 Saffer and 1 Aussie team would go. It is now up to the SARU and ARU to decide which teams.

Probably the rebels from Aus, god knows how the meat eaters will do it!? After politics is chucked in the mix it could be anyone.

They've set up a commitee to run with it
Whatever happens .... 8 Professional teams remain
the dropped team will form a conference with (Griquas Pumas(sa) Leopards) for another overseas competition (source:Roux)
Kings will join the semi-pro ranks if dropped because they did not make the top 8 (Currie Cup)
Generally its well accepted because top teams such as the Steval Pumas were denied participation (Lions were for 3 years) while a much weaker Kings were playing
as a result the fans preferred the Currie Cup

Just need the politics out, should be a straight foward comp where the best teams make the finals, not all this 1 top Aussie, 2 SA etc etc goes..
Aw well if it works in American conferences maybe it can work here, and teams are protected

There are too many teams and the competition is confusing with the conferences. The talent in Australia and South Africa is diluted because of the number of teams thus lowering the standards of their teams and there's little you lot down there can do to stop players upping sticks for France or England which is a crying shame. Why can't they get rid of the conferences and go back to a normal league?
