Post Dave Rennie Linked to Boks Coaching Job
Seems a bit like a Tel level rumour to me. Rennie is still signed with the Chiefs, and has already signed elsewhere after that.

But he'd be a very good signing for SA if they can get him. Perhaps an outsider would be the best thing for SA rugby.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/ar ... d=11760512

Quote:
Dave Rennie has emerged as a shock candidate to become coach of the Springboks.

Leading South African news outlet Rapport is reporting that South African Rugby is considered Rennie to replace current coach Allister Coetzee who has overseen the worst Springbok season in history.

Coetzee is already on record as saying he expects to be sacked after losing nine tests this year including a first ever loss to Six Nations minnows Italy, ending the season with a miserable 33% winning record.

According to Rapport, South African officials have already begun work behind the scenes to secure Rennie who is stepping down from Super Rugby franchise the Chiefs at the end of the 2017 competition.

Coetzee is set to face a performance appraisal by a sub-committee of SA Rugby, and will know after 13 December whether or not he will remain in the top job.

Rapport claimed Rennie, who led the Chiefs to the Super Rugby title in 2012 and 2013, has strongg support at the highest level of SA Rugby. The news outlet calimed other coaches under consideration include former Boks mentor Jake White and Rassie Erasmus.

However, it also claimed "a potential stumbling block" to any removal of Coetzee will cost R13m ($NZ1.32m) to pay him out of the remaining two years of his contract. SA Rugby is in a dire financial situation, with the governing body reported to be as much as R19m ($NZ2m) in the red.

The other problem is Rennie signed a two-year deal with Glasgow in Scotland, with an option of a third, several months ago.

At the time, he said he has aspirations for an international role.

"There'll be a lot of international jobs come up after 2019 but ultimately the thinking is it will give us a couple of years at Glasgow and then give us a chance to see how things have gone," he said at the time.

"If we're loving it there we may be keen to stay longer. It's what has tended to happen."

Just a rumour
They decide on the Bok coach on the 13-th but there is no performance clause in his contract for the first year, only from year two
To end the current coach's contract now cost 13 mil
The rumour is the Lions(sa) through their good relationship with Rennie can get him onboard and get Supersport to pay the 13 mil needed for Coetzee and thus get more viewers onboard Supersport again
ANC also voiced their concern regarding letting Coetzee go and they are the Ruling Party with their tentacles deep into sport. The chances are good though they will beaten at the ballot box in 2019 (next general election) and SA will then move to open sport. Still developing at grass roots level in previously disadvantaged communities (as it should be) but best player can play irrespective colour at national level (as with the Blitzboks).

... the other candidates the same newspaper mentioned with Rennie's name are
Rassie Erasmus (coach in Ireland and will cost some serious money) aswell as ANC won't allow
Jake White free from contract but a bit of a hard headed man coming to relationship with Saru bosses. Was very successful in 2007 as you know and got Eddie Jones aboard for the 2007 WC

Rennie would be the one to go to.

Before Rennie the Chiefs were a laughing stock. He took a team full of rejects from other franchises and made them champions. Now they are contenders every year. Top coach, I'd be seriously worried about facing SA with him in charge.

held in highest regard with the Lions (sa)
short recap Superrugby :
Lions were expelled by saru 2011-2013
Back 2014 after promo/rele (same team they won the promo/rele were back again in a year without having to play promo/rele)
few monies Lions couldn't buy but picked a rough-and-ready lot from surrounding clubs
started 2014 as amateurs again
lost to Chiefs in nz and asked Rennie what can better them! Rennie gave the Lions coaches some advice
2016 beat Chiefs in NZ and contested the finals against Canes in nz after dismissing the Crusaders and Highlanders in Quarters/Semis :)
What Rennie told them I do not know all (I read he said new players is not the answer but to use what they have and upskill them handling counter attacking etc.) but the Lions changed style and after 2 years of hard work is regarded high in Superrugby

Pipe dream. Coetzee isn't going anywhere. If you got no money or power (politics), you got nuthin'.

Since he's leaving the Chiefs regardless I'd rather he went to SA than to just some NH club. It'd be really interesting to see what he could come up with from the SA talent pool.

....SA talent pool , I was surprised when Deans picked Kwagga for open flank fetcher for his Babaas and Akker as hooker Du Preez at 10. Initially RjvR was picked aswell. Surprised in that Deans an outsider knew they are talented players.
I would have loved to see Ruhle , the Seabelo Senatla 7version in 15s playing wing for the Cheetahs getting more exposure aswell.
SA still have of the best players at school level. The ANC sports minister just made a rule though that model C schools (previously Afrikaans schools) have to switch over to playing soccer at school and form leagues. It is another forced law and traditionally coming from rugby few will adapt to soccer, teachers also teached rugby in their spare time without getting paid based on their love for the game whereas it is found there are no structured soccer leagues at school due to teachers not prepared to coach without getting paid. Soccer is also a sport manu of the prev model C's are anyway excluded from at national level due to politics

'Switched over' or just told to offer soccer as a sporting option?
A link to an article where he stated this would be nice.

No *fupping* clue if this has any legs whatsoever, but it'd be awesome to see him in charge of the meat eaters. Probably cost a small fortune to buy him out of his contract up north, but it's worth it.

big push from the Lions to get Dave Rennie aboard coming from the time that saru ousted the Lions and Rennie helped Lions management in advising them how to turn their ship around and it worked
the committee that decides if Coetzee stays includes the Lions President, a rugby man himself (played Springbok lock) but their are others in the saru committee that are playing politics , no rugbymen but men that only see colour of skin for the benefit of their own fatcat paychecks
Lions president has big business savvy and it seems he'll advise they buy Coetzee out and get Rennie aboard with the help of Supersport who lost millions in revenue and viewership as of lately because of ... Coetzee
Thus a win-win. The money is sponsored but it will pay back when Rennie turns it around and he will sooner than later

Rennie said No! Big disappointment. He asked if he and the selectors will be able to pick the best but the answer was NO! Strictly according to quota % only and he said no

Rumour here that White may be in the running.

His contract ends in June

If his stay at Montpelier is anything to go by it's ...... territory and power play, leopard has the. same spots.

Maybe back to these basics might be a good thing instead of the current mishapen game plan, if one exists. that is.
