A big upset for sure, but NZ generally haven't been such a big force in Sevens in recent years like they were initially. Don't forget they also lost to Japan in the Olympics. More generally, it seems that upsets are easier in Sevens than in XVs, since they are shorter, require less money and smaller squads and are less forwards-dominated.

The Blitzbok lead over main rival Fiji was 23 points but by beating Fiji 19 - 14 for the lower places the Blitzbokke increased the lead by 25 points
Another main rival England increased on Fiji again.

Coach Powell on why his Blitzboks is a transformation success story:
' we don't see colour'
' we pick players on playing ability alone'
'I never had to re-select a team to meet the govt quota percentage for rugby'
Powell signed till 2020
I hope some one sees this blue print for success and start implementing it into our xv game

Neil Powell became the first person to win the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series as a player and as a coach. He was part of the Blitzboks that clinched the title in 2008/9 and now won it as coach of the same team he played for in 32 tournaments and Captained as well.
