Stade F owner Savare is v wealthy, he bought Stade from near liquidation.
His family was against it from the start.
Despite winning the Top14 recently the fortunes have fallen, qualification for Champs Cup overall performance and financial bottom line. He has probably covered at leat 10m euros of deficit. Many of his players are off to other Clubs incl internationals. The Coach has resigned for end of Season etc Attendances have fallen from the halcyon days of 80k Top14 matches 3 or 4 times a Season.
He wants out.
Lorenzetti is equally rich and bought out Racing combined with another Club and formed Racing 92/ Their stadium the old International ground at Colombes is decrepid. Lorenzetti's interests are real estate , wine etc
He floated a new 300m sporting stadium roofed 35k capacity near the major commercial area of Paris near St Denis.
THe people living there etc and other reasons made life very difficult. In reality it is a huge real estate project and will house 24/7 business and events and also accomodation. The Racing stadium projectr was at the heart of it
He got it through and it opens soon!
Lorenzetti is very entrepreurial and has used rugby within his business .. eg rugby ventures Racing/Toulouse in H Kong and is using it to further his wine interests in Asia which is the major growth area !! He's not daft and has eyes on the Japan W Cup and furthering bus interests there too ... These ventures are used to promote his biusiness ventures as well as using rugby as a focal point.
Wether the merger will be a joint interest or not will be telling but I would think that Lorenzetti is the driver.
The potential size of the merger and it's clout could be very significant.
Interesting too that the rugby structure below top Pro level stays with the original Clabs and banners.
A typical entrepreneurial venture that could suit both parties.
I think that eyes are also on broader international competition if a World wide timetable is effective. World Rugby have lived in fear of such interest and clout at World level. We have discussed offline other potential interests eg SA and Saracens etc ..
PS the above is my analysis and may be wide of the mark but I don't think so
