From a TeamGB perspective Australia are beating us 84 - 81 and ahead on gold medals 31 - 29, bit of a turn round from Rio.

The Velodrome was again brilliant IMO, some cracking races.

It amazes me the Commonwealth Games still exists.

It's a tremendous sporting event.

Many, many countries are involved and some autonomous islands and island states.

The Queen has given massive, unqualified support and it's a force for good.

And, all the participants just love it.

Your amazement that it still exists is a bit surprising, I love Team GB being split into its component parts and then watching Scotland and Wales getting good results.

Well done the BBC for their coverage - it's more happy and cheerful than most sporting events on the box.

Given that the British Empire was very much in the past why do we do we need a Commonwealth Games? It does baffle me why an independent country like Australia would want the Queen as their head of state. It’s the 21st Century!
Meh Bouchy. Meh.

Just read up about this and at least all the countries that take part are equals. I suppose that’s an improvement on the master/servant colonisation of these countries so it’ has its merit. I won’t be watching though.

You're displaying an example of the mentality that so many Welsh people have when it comes to Cymru. It's one that goes beyond self deprecating (ho ho typical Welsh nationalist can't take a joke )and falls into the sad and pathetic role of - we're inferior to the English and if I don't know for sure I'll still assume we must be.

https://www.thestatszone.com/team-gb-ol ... -come-from

Based on population Cymru has a similar success rate to England in the Olympic games. I'll leave you to do the maths there're a limit to the spoon feeding I'm willing to do.

A far as medals are concerned the analysis shows that the South East of England is the best performing part of the UK. It's the richest area- recent analysis showed that medal winners that came from fee paying schools were disproportionately more prevalent compared with those that attended state schools. Also I'd be surprised if there weren't more facilities and national centers of excellence for various sports in South East England also.

However even if Cymru was less successful that England so what. India with it's enormous population is less successful than England but it's no argument that India should compete in the Olympics as part of the British empire never mind be part of it.

The Solomon Islands won its first ever Commonwealth Games medal, a bronze won by Jenly Tegu Wini in the women's 58 kg weightlifting event
