Now it's time for Froome and the other iron men to perform.

Defending champion Tony Martin (Germany) will return for 2017, but will face strong competition :-

Giro d’Italia winner Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands),

Victor Campenaerts (Belgium)
Stefan Küng (Switzerland)
Rohan Dennis (Australia)

It was live on BBC2 and then Red Button (601).

Giro d’Italia winner Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands) was totally prepared and was a class apart, extending his lead was helped by that rain and nobody get close.

Froome was just extraordinary - as usual - but his chase was going backwards before the climb and he was thrilled to get on the podium. A superb effort - and he got his reward.

UCI Road World championships 2017, elite men’s time trial, 31km

1. Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands), in 44-41.00

2. Primož Roglič (Slovenia), at 57.79 secs
3. Chris Froome (Great Britain), at 1-21.25
