England have a dilemma to face in their selection of a partner for Alistair Cook on the Ashes tour. I do not think that Stoneman is the answer, and Hameed and Jennings have both been discarded. The options are so limited I feel that Joe Root should take on the job; or Moheen Ali / Bairstow. A real crisis would occur if Cooke was injured. It is an easier task to find a mid order batsman to replace the above mentioned.

If the selectors do decide to take a chance on one of these guys, I suspect that the present incumbent Stoneman will get the nod, but perhaps they should also consider Hameed. Yes he has had a torrid season, but in the current match against Essex the Lancashire lad has scored an undefeated 32 runs out of 125-6 in 53 overs !! This is really Trevor Bailey, Geoff Boycott stuff, and his presence in the Ashes team could still be an asset for England. There is a saying that in Test cricket a batsman scoring 50 runs in 50 overs is of more value than one who scores 50 in 50 minutes.

Hameed has the temperament in spades, none of the current alternatives look any better and you know the bowling will be torrid.

We are all in the gutter but me and my mam are looking at the stars!
