Post 2nd Test against the Windies
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/41052715

England suffered against a reviewed and revised Windies pack of quicks and the usual failures failed again.

The difference this time was that Cook and Root didn't score a hundred runs between them.

Fall of wickets

19-1 (7.2 ovs) Cook
26-2 (10.4 ovs) Westley
37-3 (14.6 ovs) Stoneman
71-4 (28.4 ovs) Malan
140-5 (43.5 ovs) Root

Thanks to Stokes' century - c Dowrich b Gabriel 100 - off 124 balls, England reached 258 all out.

The Windies lost a wicket immediately and they'll be worried about this turning and bouncing wicket this morning.

19 for 1 off 12 overs looked chancy at Headingley and the first hour this morning will be tense.

Weather - Dry and sunny all day.

West Indies missed a great chance here, the drops cost 150 runs. England will get thumped in the Ashes based on this.

Windies look a hell of a lot better when the sun is shining.

I don't fancy the Windies getting more than 130 second time around; but this performance is a step in the right direction for them.

It would be good for cricket though if they could spring a surprise, and take the series to Lords for the decider.

Westley needs a break to regain any form still available, he's easy meat at the moment, poor bugger.

Root was quick to ask for a review and he must have been surprised to see that ball missing - a bit of luck that.

However, 2 or 3 wickets tomorrow morning could well be decisive. 6 down at lunch is unthinkable.

The weather forecast is almost encouraging - cloudy before lunch (gulp) and solid sunshine after that.

Be lucky, England!

I've just about calmed down and I'm still in disbelief.

Never mind the dropped catches, never mind the lucky escapes.

I was a bowler and I want to know who was setting the fields for English bowlers today.

With an Offy turning the ball square you ALWAYS put in a leg slip. Whether he's up within 8 or 10 paces or a little further back depends on how quick the Offy is going to bowl.

When you know that a batsman habitually blocks with the ball rising to leg off a bat pad, or just off the bat, you ALWAYS put in a man under the helmet.

Runs to third man kill you in a run chase when the batsmen are on top. Why was no fielder stuck down there to stop conceding the extra two or three runs?

IN SHORT, ENGLAND MADE A TOTAL MESS OF DEFENDING A DEFENDABLE TOTAL.

A A R G H !!

Chuffed for the West Indies. That was a proper Test match.

Bouch, you must have watched a different game from me. Had the West Indies held their catches, it might have been an innings defeat for England

I was talking about England's performance in the field, byti.

I don't necessarily condemn dropped catches - by the Windies or England - because I dropped a few myself in my 40s.

What I do moan about is the gifting of runs because of questionable field settings.

Only a fool fails to defend when the other side gets lucky. England only spread the field when somebody twigged that the unlikeliest of wins was on for the Windies.

Here's one point of view - catches win matches and all that - http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/cricket/england-west-indies-test-best-11078317

And, here's Fiery :-

Quote:
Some people are going to blame Joe Root for declaring and not batting on and making sure the game was safe.

But I disagree. To score 322 in the fourth innings was a hell of a lot of runs. Obviously it will make Joe wary of declaring in the future. When Len Hutton put Australia in to bat at Brisbane in 1954 and lost by an innings he always said after that "if you think of putting a side into bat, think again and bat yourself".

Joe will be the same about declaring, but I hope it does not make him a safe captain because he could not legislate for Alastair Cook dropping two slip catches or the number of times the ball beat the bat when it was new from Broad and Anderson. That is the game.

It was great for cricket. If West Indies had been set a ridiculously high target they would have shut up shop for a draw. We would have had a tiresome day with only one side going for a win.

I loved this comment from Test Match Special commentator Fazeer Mohammed :-

Quote:
"This was one of the most remarkable transformations in the history of Test cricket".

"When Shai Hope was nine years old he was interviewed on Barbados TV and asked what his dream was. He said he wanted to play for West Indies. Dreams do come true."

Absolutely spot on.

A wonderful result for cricket !! Let us hope this result triggers the re-appearance of the Caribbean supporters at matches world wide.
