Jeez you needed crampons to get up some of the ramps today

24, 25, 26 degrees? Millar described it as "Horrific" and he wasn't wrong.

Looking at a clump of SKY riders seemed reassuring at first.

Then you realised that they were there in a knot because Froome was in deep trouble.

He lost time, of course he did, but that was kept to a minimum by SKY - only 42 seconds.

Contador was just outstanding and his retirement will be a sad loss. Nibali was excellent beyond words and the winner was unbelievable.

RESPECT.

Stage Result

1. Stefan Denifl (Aus/Aqua Blue Sport) 4hrs 48mins 52secs

2. Alberto Contador (Spa/Trek-Segafredo) +28secs

3. Miguel Angel Lopez (Col/Astana Pro Team) +1mins 04secs

4. Vincenzo Nibali (Ita/Bahrain-Merida) Same time

Froome was back in 14th place and that was a Herculean effort as well.

General classification

1. Chris Froome (GB/Team Sky) at 67hrs 44min 03secs

2. Vincenzo Nibali (Ita/Bahrain-Merida) +1mins 16secs

3. Wilco Kelderman (Ned/Team Sunweb) +2mins 13secs

4. Ilnur Zakarin (Rus/Katusha-Alpecin) +2mins 25secs

5. Alberto Contador (Spa/Trek-Segafredo) +3mins 34secs

6. Miguel Angel Lopez (Col/Astana Pro Team) +4mins 39secs

7. Michael Woods (Can/Cannondale-Drapac) +6mins 33secs

8. Wout Poels (Ned/Team Sky) +6mins 40secs

I think we are finding out Froome's Achilles heel. He suffered on 1 stage in the TDF and a couple here when there are ramps of 20-25%. He's picked up a few today but has Saturday to get through yet which is regarded as the toughest climb in Pro cycling

He made 20 seconds or so on Nibali today - that impressed me, Big.

And, it's job done, short of Froome being mown down by a vehicle today.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/41215172

The facts and figures of his forthcoming double made me wince.

And, as Millar said, winning the TDF and the Vuelta in the same year is very different these days cf: to times gone by. Much more difficult climbs in a 3 week Vuelta, not a fortnight, and it isn't staged in January any more.

Can't fault the man, incredible feat :thumbright:

It should also be saud that the Sky team is excellent and a huge asset.

Urgghhhh!

Green, White and Red for Froome.

Congrats I suppose.

Notice he's been constantly coughing throughout the Tour and the Vuelta........possibly a long term illness which makes his success even more impressive, or maybe a side-effect of the latest PED?

Of FFS. A bit of snide innuendo there. Do you have more proof than he coughs a lot? If not then STFU.
Oh and "Congrats I suppose" Jeez
