Post Re: Formula One in 2017
Lewis Hamilton was "devastated" in Monaco yesterday.

He could not believed the car's lack of performance and he ended up chasing vainly for a reasonable grid position.

The ultimate smack in the chops was a yellow flag right at the end of his last lap of frenzied futility.

That crash by a McLaren jalopy after a mistake by Stoffel Vandoorne has left Hamilton so far back that he needs a series of miracles to score reasonable points today.

Here's the BBC's take on it :-

Quote:
On his first lap, a flick of oversteer at the fast Massenet corner at the top of the hills looked set to trigger a heavy crash, but Hamilton just kept the car out of the barriers, taking his hand off the wheel and shaking it afterwards as a reaction to how close he had come to an accident.

He complained to engineer Peter Bonnington: "I've got no grip, Bono. I've got to come in. Something is just not right with the car."

When he went out again, things were no better. This time it was Casino that nearly caught him out, the car flicking into over-steer over the crest at the famous corner, Hamilton again just rescuing it from the barriers.

That left him with one last lap to try to get into the top 10 shoot-out, but as he was on it, Stoffel Vandoorne crashed his McLaren at the Swimming Pool, bringing out the yellow flags ......

The other driver who met disaster was Jenson Button. Astute observers had already noted Alonso's car's accumulation of mechanical problems that meant Jenson needed divine intervention to avoid a grid penalty.

The extra mechanical problems duly arrived and Button will start from further back than Hamilton.

Here we go - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/2017/monaco-grand-prix/results/qualifying

Hamilton - 14th

Button - 20th (Last)

Ballhooks!!

Bouch, are you just cut and pasting again?

You dont do Button justice :angry4:

Button did an excellent P9 especially given it was his first time in the new design etc ...it was praiseworthy

Not a single on lap overtaking move in the whole race.

Button had an incident that transformed the race.

Button's not-so-low-key comeback

Button's one-off return to Formula 1 as a replacement for Alonso, who was in America to race in the Indianapolis 500, ended in a crash, which was wholly Button's fault, with Sauber's Pascal Wehrlein.

Interesting video.

The Canadian GP this week and The Wall of Champions will see safety cars in action, no doubt.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has a combination of slippery surface, big braking zones and close-in perimeter walls.

That almost unique set of challenges will produce a tough race for the drivers even in the new spec cars.

If you like cars banging together and slamming into walls, this could be the one race for you guys to watch this year.

Personally, I'd love to see a Nascar vehicle go round here at half pace in the dry. It would be different - and one lap is all I ask for

A mighty start from Lewis and Wunderkind Max Verstappen saw Vettel in the pits to change his front wing and that was that really.

Hardly anything went wrong for Mercedes and they were happy with a One-Two. That's the first of the season - there will be more.

Oh, and Alonso went totally apeshit when his engine conked - again. His £50k steering wheel might need replacement as he was a little miffed. He walked into the crowd for some love and starting giving his togs away. All is not well at Hamilton's former lords and masters. There will be repercussions for Japanese involvement with F1 - again.

And, Force India will have a few words to say to their drivers about team orders. They picked up points but it could have been more. Perez is a knob.

It's tough at the top and Ferrari still lead - McLaren are without a point this season and that leaves Honda with sushi on their mugs.

Here's the BBC talking about huge collisions and stuff - F1 is sooo boring - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/40241886

Ferrari dont lead the constructors Championship ... Merc do.

Vettel leads the Drivers championship but lost points to Hamilton.

Hamilton joined Senna as joint 2nd to Schumacher in Top Grid starts.

Azabaijan(sp?) GP

Thrilling race

Result Ricciardo, zBottas, Stroll, Vettel, Hamilton....

Was Hamiltons race .....but 2 safety cars brought him back to the pack and what did for him was the surrounding cover to his seating was loose and it cost him a return to the pits to replace and fix.

Bottas was a lap back after the start ...minor crash, Ricciardo in trouble too but took wise opportunity on tyres, Vettel tracked Hamilton but also fouled him during the safety car procession ..incurred a 10 sec penalty but was able to rejoin the race in front of Hamilton ...who was caught up in traffic after his enforced stop...

Meanwhile with all this going on Ricciardo stole the lead and young 18yr old Stroll found himself in second and Bottas worked his way up to third with Vettel on 4th and Hamilton close behind.

Bottas passed Stroll on the line for 2nd...

If the above is complicated the race was even more complicated than that with safety car intervention and the race stopped. But for Hamiltons lead diminished twice with safety cars and his ptoblem with driver surround (he was ordered to replace it without option) the race was his, Stroll became the youngest Podium presence abd this after a disappointing season to date and only 1 point in the championship gained in the last race in Aus ...

Wow
