Post Re: Chelsea FC
Chelsea dominated WBA for most of the match and finally won it with a late goal from a player who's hardly played this season. Michy Batshuayi take a bow.

He's become a legend. :D

Quote:
Manager Conte's fingerprints are all over this title triumph - and his sure touch was on show again to fashion the victory they needed to get over the line with two games to spare.

The Italian knew his side needed a catalyst to break down West Brom, and it came with the introduction of Batshuayi and Willian for Hazard and Pedro with 15 minutes left.

The stats behind Chelsea's title win :-

◾Chelsea won their sixth top-flight title and fifth in the Premier League era.
◾Chelsea are the first club to win the English top-flight title on a Friday since Arsenal at Anfield in 1989.
◾Conte is the fourth Italian manager to win the English top-flight title after Ancelotti, Roberto Mancini and Claudio Ranieri.
◾Chelsea scored with their 23rd shot of the match at West Brom.
◾A Belgian player has scored the title-deciding goal in each of the past three Premier League seasons (Batshuayi v West Brom in 2016-17, Eden Hazard v Tottenham in 2015-16 and v Crystal Palace in 2014-15).

MOTM last night was Cesc Fabregas - again.

In Italy he's known as `Il Martello' - The Hammer' - and he's relentless in his quest for success.

Antonio Conte signed a three-year deal to take charge of Chelsea in April 2016.

The 46-year-old coach enjoyed an illustrious playing career, the majority of which was spent at Juventus. He rose to prominence at his hometown club US Lecce but was signed by Giovanni Traptattoni and moved to Turin in 1991.

Five Serie A titles followed with other successes coming via the Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and UEFA Intertoto Cup. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 1995/96 and finished as a runner-up on three other occasions.

Conte, who also represented Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 UEFA European Championship, hung up his boots in 2004 and turned to coaching shortly after.

he agreed to move to Juventus in May 2011.

Three consecutive Serie A titles were won under the stewardship of Conte, as well as back-to-back Supercoppa Italiana successes.

During his stay in Turin, Conte won the Panchina d'Oro – awarded to the best Serie A coach of the season - for each of his three years in charge.

After resigning in the summer of 2014, Conte replaced Cesare Prandelli as head coach of the Italy national side, leading the Azzurri to UEFA Euro 2016 qualification with seven wins and three draws in qualifying.

Following Italy's UEFA Euro 2016 quarter-final defeat to Germany, Conte joined up with Chelsea for their pre-season to lead the Blues into the 2016/17 Premier League campaign.

I enjoyed the game last night - Chelsea's 29th win of the season according to the commentator.

John Terry scored a joyful goal and then immediately goofed to gift Watford a goal. Terry is not the man he was.

3-1 became 3-3 and the party looked like ending on a slightly sour note until Cesc Fabregas clipped the ball in from the edge of Watford's penalty area with a couple of minutes to go. Beautiful skill and the nearest defender was left wondering what the hell happened as he beat the ground in frustration.

That made it 4 - 3 and a disappointed clonk promptly earned himself a red card to tarnish a good effort from Watford.

MON, 15 May 2017 - Premier League

Chelsea 4 - Watford 3

Scorers - Chelsea

Terry (22'minutes),
Azpilicueta (36'minutes),
Batshuayi (49'minutes),
Fàbregas (88'minutes)

Scorers - Watford

Capoue (24'minutes),
Janmaat (51'minutes),
Okaka (74'minutes),

Conte can do no wrong and he was being cheered at Stamford Bridge within seconds of appearing in his technical area after winning the Premier League at the first time of asking.

From the BBC :-

Quote:
This was a night for Chelsea to bask in the glory of their success and hard work this season, and the Stamford Bridge faithful warmed to the occasion as the Chelsea Captain scored a rare goal after 22 minutes.

For Conte, it was also the opportunity to give some of his shadow squad game time, with the likes of Thibaut Courtois and Nemanja Matic given the night off and Diego Costa, Fabregas, Pedro, Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso on the bench.

It was not simply a matter of giving Terry a game and showcasing younger talent such as Nathan Ake and Nathaniel Chalobah - this was a selection with a glance towards the forthcoming FA Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley.

Arsenal were excellent today and fully deserved to beat us.

A few odd decisions from a referee that favoured them early on but, in truth, Chelsea weren't able to score in the first half and Arsenal's secret weapon was outstanding.

Bravo Herr Mertesacker.

Chelsea were a lot better in the second half but Arsenal closed it out very well.

Match stats

Possession

Arsenal 52% Chelsea 48%

Shots

Arsenal 16, with 6 on target

Chelsea 18, with 5 on target

◾Per Mertesacker started his first game for Arsenal since 30 April 2016 [against Norwich], a 392 day gap.

◾Arsenal have beaten Chelsea twice in a season [in all competitions] for the first time since 2003-04.

◾Sanchez has scored in five successive games for Arsenal in all competitions for the first time. The Chilean has been directly involved in 45 goals in 51 appearances for Arsenal this season [30 goals, 15 assists].

◾Diego Costa netted his 22nd goal of the season for Chelsea in all competitions - his best-ever return in a single campaign for the Blues.

I'm gutted that Chelsea didn't get the double but Mertesacker was a giant in the Arsenal defence and he lifted his team mates to heights not seen for years.

Final comment from Chelsea manager Antonio Conte:
Quote:
"I think the first goal was very strange. The first half we didn't start well, we didn't have the right approach and we suffered in first 25 minutes. We started to play better in the second half and the red card was decisive".

"There is disappointment for the final result but it can happen and there was a lot of pressure. Victor Moses has been good and played an important season".

"Our season was incredible to win the league in this way, it was great but now it's important to look forward and to restart".

Not good news overnight - Eden Hazard has been injured training for Belgium.

Reports from their camp say that he's broken his right ankle.

Life's a bugger isn't it?

Oh, and Chelsea Ladies won the Womens Super League, scoring twice as many goals (32 to 16) as the runners up.

The Elephant in the Room has just come into the light.

Diego has announced that he's not wanted by Conte.

Hmmm.

Here's Conte's wish list :-

Chelsea are close to signing midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from French champions Monaco.

Blues manager Antonio Conte has identified France international Bakayoko, 22 years old, as a player who can strengthen the Premier League champions' squad. Talks have taken place and the transfer - which would be Chelsea's first of the summer - could be completed this week.

Juventus and Brazil wing-back Alex Sandro is also thought to be a target for Conte, and the Blues have been linked with re-signing Everton's Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku and Southampton and Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk,

All goes well, I hope.

Chelsea have signed a very young Welsh lad who is still only 16 years old.

Ethan Ampadu is clearly an exceptional young midfield player as he was called into the senior Wales squad earlier this year..

Tammy Abraham has signed a 5-year deal with Chelsea and he's on loan to Swansea, and Coach Paul Clement, for 2017/18.

Premier League champions Chelsea have signed Germany defender Antonio Rudiger from Roma on a five-year contract for an initial fee of £29m.

Rudiger, 24, completed the transfer one week after helping world champions Germany win the Confederations Cup.

"It's a great feeling because not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this," said Rudiger.

The fee for Chelsea's first major signing of the summer could rise to £33.3m with add-on clauses.

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata for about £60m.

The Spain international must now agree personal terms and pass a medical to complete the transfer.

The 24-year-old would be the Premier League champions' fourth signing of the summer.

No new signings today?

What is going on?

Diego and Matic are going, it seems.

The latest "scoop" is that Diego was told 6 months ago that he was no longer wanted and he scored a few goals after that.

I'd have kept him but .....

Matic is/was a key player and the club want £50 million for him it is said.

Bargain, eh?
