Post World Championship Helsinki 2005
It has been announced that not a single member of the Great Britain team has made a tack and field final in this years world championship in Helsinki.

Ive been a keen spectator of Athletics for about 10 years now and I cannot remember such a farce. Does anyone here know of any problems that exist in how our Athletic Association cultivates our athletes?

Lottery money has been used by most Athletes to buy cars, or so I heard.

I just think with many retirements such as Edwards, Jackson, Dwyer etc. has shown at this years competition we dont have the talent stepping up and taking over.

But youre also right Mab, we need to get them into sport as young as possible and it is not happening with primary schools selling playing fields.

Oh, and Backley :)

Instead of being used for a general grassroots athletics it went to individual atheletes who are generally not good enough to make the mark...if I remember rightly we still have a problem with funding for the coaches who still do it on an amateur basis

Hard to get a good athlete going if they can't afford spikes let along afford to go and compete at these events...

True, but theres no reason spending top money on Lewis-Francis just because he ran a sub 10 second race 4 years ago and very little success since!

Perhaps there is just not the talent in this generation of athletes?

The main problem is pay...unless you can break the big time quick you have no money...this amateur stuff is a load of *b@ll@cks* in my view

Oh I am in no way advocating amatuer athletics - we need a fully professional Athletics body that is successful and productive.

I would lean towards a system where all our top athletes are professional but only get bonus' based on achievement on the track/field/pool/water.

Not sure about bonuses...makes it all a bit cutthroat in a competitive sport...we'll have drive- bys in some cities over this ;)

If the are professional they should be able to finance themselves via sponsorship etc.

Perhaps its the incentive needed.

I think they do this in the US and they dominate the track events.

They've been getting help from the Lawn Tennis Association.
