It shall officially bring an end to an exceptionally illustrious career. Possibly Wales' best-ever prop, at least since 1980 anyway. All the same, he was seldom if ever playing in recent months anyway.

He sits at the top table with the great of welsh rugby players the likes of Gareth Edwards, JPR, Barry John

A true old school prop but he was never going to have a place in the modern game. Seems like a very genuine guy and I hope he has a good coaching career.

Was the Lions top tight head on the 2009 tour, had to rescue the Lions scrum after Vickery was demolished in the first half of the first test I believe.
Pretty modern.... ;)

Modern being since they introduced the pause in scrum. The role of props has changed quite a bit since then so they can no longer be just scrummagers.

Find a prop of his era who was better, give the man his due.

Firstly, I'd disagree with you about the modern era thing.

Secondly, sport is about the game you are playing in. He did brilliantly in the games he played in, better than anyobe in his position. That relative measure is all that mattered.

Was brilliant in 2009 and should have started for Lions only for rowntree to pick his mate vickery... who then got stuffed

I actually thought his best performance was against England in 2012 at twickenham. We scraped through that day and didn’t play well but him and gethin scrapped for everthing.

Favourite memory was Gethin Jenkins telling Cian Healy he was taking a hiding from Jones in the 2011 World Cup. Jenkins delivered that message with trademark subtly

For the sake of clarity, By the modern game I was referring more to very recently since the scrums changed and props had to be more mobile. Prior to that he was one of the best props in the world and the best scrummager. As the game moved on he didn't keep up and let his fitness slide towards the end of his career.

A great guy though and I think he will do well as a scrum coach.

Adam, ... not a straightforward character, not wysiwyg by a long chalk?

Saw him on Celebrity Mastermind recently and I remember a full page Sunday Times article on him, ...quite different from what I imagined, ...I'll try and dig it out ...it was an interesting insight.

Great asset to Wales and the true cornerstone of the Welsh pack in a relatively successful era. On that Lions tour, he got himself or at least was helped to get into the kind of condition and weight that made him very much a modern prop. He was seldom in that kind of condition, but he knew his way around the rugby field and was a destructive scrummager. At the end of his international career, in the period leading up to the Welsh tour of SA, his lack of fitness was being exposed. Legend of the game for a decade though and that's how he should be thought of.

I thought Gethin Jenkins was a far better all round forward frankly
